For example (I'll pull these examples out of my rear cuz I don't have specific ones), Yue Jin's R1+X might have the same purpose as Taishi Ci's, a knockdown move, but the former at least lets me connect into another move that allows me to zoom all around the enemy, then jump in the air and do some other stuff then (I believe this is true even when Yue Jin uses the Pugil Sticks), whereas the latter will just stay there and keep on wailing on the enemy in ways that Yue Jin wouldn't necessarily master, and this is mostly true regardless of whether you choose to use R1+Square, a musou attack, the simple square string, whatever. Having similarities doesn't mean the characters as a whole feel samey. But I don't see how that's different from saying 'every character since DW2 plays the same because every C2 is a juggle, every C3 is a stun, every C4 is a crowd clearer', aka the nonsense I've seen in other threads. the later 3 put the enemy into one of 3 positions (airborne, stunned, or downed) which determines which string you get the r1+circle is basically like the 3rd musou from 8 and links to one of the 3 strings based on the enemy positions.
